Gretchen Leary

Introduction: This was written while listening to Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” (Op. 71 No. 14) I encourage you to listen to the piece while reading this.

Daylight has dwindled as
The sun has closed his eyes
Here a blue moon has risen
High to his throne
Of endless skies

The stars are his minions
And anxiously dance about
Like a million sparks of light
Weaving through fading clouds

And perched at the top
Of a tall ominous tree
An old owl wakes
And screeches his warning-

Leaves rustle as creepers
Scamper and hide
And from the shadows
A coyote lets out a battle cry.
